My Interview Experience with Amazon for Frontend Engineer
Overview
Amazon is one of the world's largest technology companies, hiring frontend engineers across multiple product groups, including Amazon Pay, the company's payments and financial services division. Roles within Amazon Pay (Global) focus on building scalable, customer-facing interfaces that handle transactions for millions of users worldwide.
Frontend engineering interviews at Amazon are designed to assess both technical depth and alignment with the company's well-known 16 Leadership Principles. Candidates typically move through an online assessment, multiple on-site technical rounds, and a hiring manager round, each evaluating a different aspect of frontend competency.
Interview Process

- Round 0 — Online Assessment (OA): A frontend-specific round consisting of two UI challenges in Vanilla JavaScript and over 30 behavioral questions tied to Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles.
- Round 1 — Technical Round (Frontend Coding): Focused on JavaScript fundamentals and a live coding task.
- Round 2 — Technical Round (Frontend System Design): Centered on designing a large-scale frontend application.
- Round 3 — Hiring Manager Round (Techno-Managerial): Combined frontend system design with managerial assessment.
Each on-site round was eliminatory, meaning performance in every stage influenced progression to the next.
Technical Rounds
Round 0 — Online Assessment
The online assessment was entirely frontend-focused and contained two Vanilla JavaScript challenges:

- Implementing form UI logic with validation for name, email, and contact number fields.
In addition, candidates were expected to answer 30 or more behavioral questions mapped to Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles. This round tested raw frontend implementation skills without the aid of frameworks or external libraries.
Round 1 — Frontend Coding
This round opened with leadership-principle questions before moving into core technical topics:
- Tell me about a time you took an initiative to contribute apart from your regular tasks to improve the system or codebase.
- Tell me about a time when you had to stretch your work beyond time.
